Laura Haley joined SHN’s Rio Grande Valley office in 2014. She began her legal career as a briefing attorney for Justice John S. Anderson of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in Houston, after which she practiced appellate law and commercial litigation in Houston. Laura then spent six years as Senior Corporate Litigation Counsel for one of her clients, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc., where she tried cases, managed outside counsel, and advised the company about document retention, e-discovery, internal investigations, and corporate governance. Before joining SHN, Laura moved to the RGV and started her own firm.

Laura attended the University of Houston, where she earned a B.A. in English and an M.A. in English Literature. She taught English at the University of Houston and Houston Community College before enrolling at South Texas College of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude. While in law school, Laura competed as an oralist and brief writer for South Texas’s appellate advocacy teams.

Laura adds depth to SHN’s collective experience in business and commercial litigation, oil and gas litigation, and personal injury law. She also has considerable experience in in maritime and bankruptcy law. In addition to handling appeals and trying cases, she assists trial counsel by consulting in litigation matters and appearing as additional counsel when appropriate. She also serves as outside general counsel to small businesses. Laura handles all aspects of litigation, from pre-litigation advisement and development of claims and defenses, through discovery, trial, post-judgment, and appellate proceedings. From Laura’s extensive experience advising clients and handling legal matters from start to finish, she provides creative approaches and strategic guidance to SHN’s clients and co-counsel.

Laura was named a Thompson Reuters’ Texas Rising Star and writes, blogs, and presents at CLEs and webinars on a variety of topics, including unique challenges and opportunities for in-house counsel, ethics, evidence, and trial and appellate procedure.
